Why it matters

For a working sports, wildlife, or news photographer, the best body is usually the one that fits the lenses, media, service support, and delivery workflow already in place. Starting from zero, the EOS R1 is the speed-first choice with integrated vertical controls and smaller files; the A1 II is the higher-resolution choice when cropping, large output, or one-body hybrid flexibility matters. Canon's U.S. page shows $6,799 for the EOS R1 but currently labels it no longer available. Sony lists the A1 II at $6,999.99. The nominal $200.99 difference is too small to justify a system switch by itself, and the Canon availability warning means a buyer must confirm dealer inventory, condition, warranty, and support before treating the two prices as equivalent.

What to compare

  • Burst speed and resolution pull in opposite directions. EOS R1 records 24.2MP files at up to 40fps with its electronic shutter. A1 II records 50.1MP files at up to 30fps. Canon favors rapid selection and delivery; Sony provides substantially more cropping and output headroom. Neither headline rate is unconditional.
  • Sony's 30fps depends on file and shooting settings. Its official guidance allows up to 30fps with the electronic shutter, while uncompressed or lossless-compressed RAW can limit Hi+ to 20fps. Lens, focus mode, aperture, flash, temperature, and other settings can also reduce the rate. Canon's 40fps likewise depends on electronic-shutter, lens, aperture, battery, and shooting conditions.
  • Pre-capture is useful on both, but configured differently. Canon can save the previous half-second, up to 20 frames at 40fps. Sony offers a configurable pre-capture window from 0.03 to 1.0 second. The better implementation depends on whether you need a short fixed safety net or more timing control.
  • Handling is a major system choice. Canon lists the R1 at 1,115 g with battery and card, including its integrated vertical grip. Sony lists the A1 II at 743 g with battery and card before any optional vertical grip. The 372 g difference is meaningful over a long event, but adding a grip changes Sony's weight and cost.
  • Media and video favor different production pipelines. Canon uses two CFexpress Type B slots and records 6K RAW internally up to 59.94p. Sony's two combination slots accept CFexpress Type A or SD cards and record 8K internally up to 29.97p. Resolution alone does not decide the better video body; codec, card inventory, heat, ingest speed, edit hardware, and delivery format do.
  • Do not buy a generic autofocus winner. Both provide extensive subject recognition, pre-capture, high-resolution viewfinders, stabilization, and professional wired networking. Test the actual sport, lens, obstructions, lighting, and control layout that define your keeper rate.

Who it is for

  • Buy Canon EOS R1 if your work rewards 40fps capture, integrated vertical handling, dual Type B media, 6K internal RAW, and an existing RF or adapted EF lens and service workflow, provided you can confirm suitable stock.
  • Buy Sony A1 II if 50.1MP crop flexibility, a lighter ungripped body, mixed Type A/SD media, 8K capture, and an existing E-mount system matter more than the extra 10fps headline.

Watch-outs

  • Canon's U.S. store showed $6,799 but marked the EOS R1 unavailable when checked July 21, 2026. Sony's U.S. price was $6,999.99. Dealer and regional stock can change quickly.
  • Burst figures require the stated shutter, file, lens, and shooting conditions. They are not guaranteed sustained rates in every setup.
  • The 1,115 g Canon and 743 g Sony figures use the same battery-and-card basis. An optional Sony vertical grip changes the comparison.
  • Official battery figures use different modes, and Sony publishes separate viewfinder and LCD ratings, so no battery winner is claimed.
  • A body-only price comparison ignores lenses, teleconverters, cards, batteries, service programs, and the cost of switching mounts. Those can exceed the body-price difference.
