What matters is how books reach the device and where you read them. Both provide a 6-inch monochrome 300ppi display, front lighting, and 16GB storage, so the decision starts with store, document, library, lighting, and water-resistance needs rather than a sharper screen or larger storage claim.

Key differences

  • Kindle fits an Amazon store and library habit, and Send to Kindle accepts supported or converted personal documents. In the US, eligible Libby loans hand off through Amazon rather than appearing through the same built-in library flow used by Kobo.
  • Kobo Clara BW directly supports EPUB and other listed formats, and offers built-in OverDrive or Libby borrowing only in supported countries and participating libraries. DRM, account, country, library, and title availability still determine what can actually be opened.
  • Kindle weighs 158g and offers adjustable brightness and dark mode, but not adjustable warm color temperature or an advertised waterproof rating. Kobo weighs 174g, adds ComfortLight PRO warm adjustment, and carries an IPX8 rating for up to 60 minutes in 2m of fresh water.
  • Amazon offers an ad-supported Kindle with sponsored screensavers and paid removal. The checked Kindle page did not expose a stable current US price comparable with Kobo's listing, so there is no supported numeric price winner.

Who it is for

  • Choose Kindle when an Amazon library and Send to Kindle already form the easiest route from purchase or personal document to reading.
  • Choose Kobo when direct EPUB support, an eligible local library, warm front-light adjustment, and water resistance are benefits you will actually use.
  • Choose neither when the current reader already opens your books, works with your library, and covers the lighting and travel conditions that matter.

Watch-outs

  • Confirm country, library card, participating library, and title eligibility before treating built-in Libby or a US Kindle handoff as guaranteed.
  • A listed file format does not remove DRM, publisher, store, or library restrictions; test the books you already own before switching ecosystems.
  • Kindle's 158g body is lighter than Kobo's 174g body, while Kobo's warm light and IPX8 rating trade weight for night and travel flexibility.
  • Do not claim a price winner until both current configurations are visible in the same market, including any Kindle advertisement-removal cost.
