What matters
The Mac mini covers the broader compact-desktop case and leaves the price gap for storage, displays, or backup. The Mac Studio earns its premium only when shorter waits or fewer constraints in long GPU, media, large-memory, or many-display work have measurable value.
Key differences
- The Mac mini uses M4 Pro with a 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU. The Mac Studio steps up to M4 Max with a 14-core CPU and 32-core GPU, giving heavy parallel graphics work more hardware headroom.
- Mac mini has 24GB unified memory at 273GB/s; Mac Studio has 36GB at 410GB/s. The Studio is the safer fit when larger local AI, video, 3D, or development projects already press the smaller memory envelope.
- Mac mini has one video encode engine and one ProRes engine and supports up to 3 displays. Mac Studio has dual video encode and dual ProRes engines and supports up to 5 displays.
- Both use Thunderbolt 5. Mac Studio also includes front SDXC and standard 10GbE, reducing adapter friction for media cards and fast wired storage or networking.
- US prices checked July 30, 2026 were US$1,599 for the Mac mini and US$2,499 for the Mac Studio, a US$900 gap. That premium makes sense only when the added headroom is routinely used.
Who it is for
- Choose the Mac mini for development, photo work, moderate video, and professional tasks that do not continuously saturate GPU, media, or memory resources.
- Choose the Mac Studio for sustained GPU or media work, larger active projects, heavy local AI or 3D workloads, or a setup that genuinely needs more displays and built-in connectivity.
- Do not pay for the Studio if the mini's measured performance already meets your deadlines; the unused premium is better spent on external storage, displays, and backup.
Watch-outs
- Unified memory and internal storage are fixed at purchase on both machines. Choose capacity before buying rather than planning a later upgrade.
- The shared internal storage tier may push media-heavy buyers toward external storage and backup, adding to total system cost.
- Current US prices are a July 30, 2026 snapshot and should be refreshed at checkout.
- No core-count comparison guarantees the same gain in every app. Codec, scene, project size, and job duration determine whether Studio headroom pays back.
