Why it matters
Start with the operating system, required apps, and peripherals. If your work depends on macOS-only software, iPhone integration, or an existing Mac workflow, choose MacBook Air. If you need Windows and can verify that your apps, drivers, accessories, and games work on Arm, Surface Laptop offers a more interactive screen and a broader built-in port mix. Microsoft's U.S. store listed the 13.8-inch Snapdragon X2 Elite model with 16 GB/512 GB at $1,699.99 on July 20, 2026, while Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air M5 started at $1,099 with the same memory and storage. The checked gap is $600.99 before promotions, warranty differences, or accessories.
What to compare
- Surface wins on touch and vertical workspace. Its 13.8-inch 2304-by-1536 display uses a 3:2 shape, supports touch, refreshes at up to 120 Hz, and is rated at 600 nits. Microsoft's specification says the laptop is optimized for touch but does not support pen input, so it should not be purchased as a stylus convertible.
- MacBook Air's 13.6-inch 2560-by-1664 display is rated at 500 nits and does not support touch. Apple does not publish a ProMotion-style refresh specification for this panel, so the decision should be framed around Surface's confirmed 120 Hz touch capability rather than an invented number for the Air.
- Surface includes two USB4 ports, USB-A, a headphone jack, and Surface Connect. MacBook Air provides two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. Surface is easier with a legacy USB accessory; the Air can charge through MagSafe without occupying either data port.
- Apple lists MacBook Air at 1.23 kg, while Microsoft lists this Surface at 1.36 kg. The roughly 130 g difference is not dramatic, but it compounds with the charger and accessories in a daily bag.
- Microsoft says many non-native apps can run through Prism emulation, but hardware drivers must be built into Windows or supplied for Arm64. Printers, audio interfaces, VPN clients, security tools, plug-ins, and anti-cheat systems deserve exact checks before purchase.
- There is no defensible universal speed or battery winner here. Microsoft claims up to 20 hours of local video playback or 16 hours of active web use; Apple claims up to 18 hours of video streaming or 15 hours of wireless web. Those figures use different platforms and methods and should not be ranked as if they were directly comparable.
Who it is for
- Buy Surface Laptop 13.8 X2 Elite if Windows is required, touch and a 3:2 screen improve your work, USB-A reduces dongle use, and every critical app and peripheral has been checked for Windows on Arm.
- Buy MacBook Air 13 M5 if you want the lighter and lower-priced 16 GB/512 GB option, already rely on Apple services or Mac software, and do not need touch or a built-in USB-A port.
Watch-outs
- This comparison uses the Snapdragon X2 Elite Surface with 16 GB/512 GB, not the less expensive X2 Plus model.
- Surface Laptop supports touch but not pen input.
- Verify required apps, plug-ins, VPNs, printers, audio hardware, security software, and games for Windows on Arm before buying.
- Official battery claims use different procedures. Display brightness, browser, network, background activity, and emulation can materially change results.
- The $1,699.99 and $1,099 prices are U.S. figures checked July 20, 2026 and can change.
